USA Rice Presents Promotion Results to Arkansas Rice Research and Promotion Board
STUTTGART, AR -- USA Rice Federation President and CEO Betsy Ward presented the annual USA Rice Council report to the Arkansas Rice Research and Promotion Board (ARRPB) today.  Ward reviewed domestic and international promotion program results with the board, which is responsible for allocating the state's rice research and promotion funds.  She also gave a financial report and provided audited financial statements to the board.

"We take our reporting responsibilities to the ARRPB very seriously," Ward said.  "The proper stewardship of promotion funds awarded the USA Rice Council from Arkansas and other Council-member states is my number one priority."

In addition to this annual program and financial report, promotion program reports are provided at other ARRPB meetings throughout the year.  Ward's presentation today included the outlook on key challenges and opportunities for U.S. rice in domestic and international markets.  She thanked the Arkansas Rice Council, its representatives on the USA Rice Council's board of directors and the Arkansas members who serve on USA Rice promotion committees for their work.

"The process for developing and overseeing promotion programs is member-driven," Ward said.  "Truly successful programs require the collaboration of engaged members and staff.  We thank the Arkansas representatives for their time and hard work at the state and national levels."

Louisiana Rice Growers Association Elects New Officers
LARGA officersCROWLEY, LA -- Louisiana Rice Growers Association board members met here last week and elected new officers: President Christian Richard of Kaplan, Vice President Damian Bollich of Jones and Secretary/Treasurer Jeffery Sylvester of Ville Platte.  In accepting the presidency, Richard commended outgoing President Jeff Durand for his service and his exceptional conservation practices.

Earlier in the evening, Durand talked about the ongoing effort to garner conservation payments for rice and crawfish producers who provide valuable migratory and shorebird habitat.  He noted that a proposal has been submitted to the Natural Resources Conservation Service that would establish a Cooperative Conservation Partnership Initiative to pay growers for qualified enhancement practices.  Although the proposal establishes a pilot program for south Louisiana rice parishes only in the first year, Durand hopes to have a full program in the next farm bill.

Louisiana Rice Producers' Group Chairman Jackie Loewer reported on the recent USA Rice Federation Government Affairs Conference and USA Rice Environmental Regulatory Subcommittee member Donald Berken reported on meetings with the Environmental Protection Agency that were held in conjunction with the conference.

Prominent Mexican Culinary School Adds Rice Course to Curriculum
Rice EncyclopediaTOLUCA, Mexico -- The ECI International Culinary School will add a rice course to its student curriculum, thanks to the USA Rice Federation's efforts in offering the school's students regular training on how to prepare rice for restaurant menus.  ECI will be using USA Rice's new Rice Encyclopedia as the primary teaching manual for the new rice course.

Gaby Carbajal of MexPromos visited ECI last week to meet with the school's academic director, Chef Soraida Mejia, and discuss the implementation of the new rice coursework.

"USA Rice Federation's Rice Encyclopedia is impressive and constitutes a very complete guide for the rice course, which we will introduce to our students in April," Mejia said.

ECI joins several other major Mexican culinary schools that include a rice course as part of their curriculum. These are all as a direct result of USA Rice's promotional efforts targeting local chef schools.  USA Rice works with top culinary schools and chef associations to increase their use of rice in the growing foodservice sector.
