WASHINGTON -- Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, hosted a Rural Summit this week that brought stakeholders from across the country together to focus on efforts to improve economic development in rural America.  Lincoln serves as chair of rural outreach for the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee.

The summit included opening remarks by Lincoln, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), chair of the Senate Democratic Outreach and Steering Committee.  There were two panel discussions provided by other senators: "Infrastructure and Access to Critical Services" and "Building a Sustainable Rural Economy."  Lincoln provided the closing remarks, which were followed by a keynote address from former President Bill Clinton.

USA Rice Federation Executive Committee member Paul T. Combs, a producer from Missouri, participated in the event along with USA Rice staff member Reece Langley.

Brazilians in Cartagena
CARTAGENA, Colombia -- Representatives of Brazil's rice industry joined USA Rice Federation members and staff for dinner during last week's Rice Americas Conference.  The two sides discussed Brazilian import needs including analysts' projections that Brazil may need anywhere from 100,000 to 150,000 metric tons of rice this year because Mercosur countries are experiencing decreased production and yields following heavy rains.

USA Rice members attending the event included Georgie Rodriguez and David Biggs of ADM Rice, and Javier Molins of The Rice Company.   Representing the Brazilian rice trade were Luiz Eduardo Yurgel of Josapar, Percio Grecco of Rice Brazil, and Renato Franzner of Urbano.

The Brazilian delegates expressed their desire to further strengthen relations with USA Rice members -- including exporters, millers, merchants, and producers -- in a format that would bring the two countries together on a regular basis.
