| USA Rice Calls for Inclusion of Rice in Potential Trade Deal with Malaysia |
WASHINGTON -- The USA Rice Federation submitted comments today to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative regarding the Obama administration's intention to enter into negotiations with Malaysia as part of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade negotiation. USA Rice supports the inclusion of Malaysia in the TPP talks, but only if rice is included in the agreement and improved market access opportunities are negotiated for U.S.-grown rice. Rice was excluded from the U.S.-Korea free trade agreement and USA Rice urged that this exclusion not be repeated.
Malaysia imports approximately 1 million tons of long-grain rice annually, largely from regional suppliers like Thailand and Vietnam. In addition to the United States, eight countries in Asia and North and South America are negotiating a broad regional trade agreement, and Malaysia was recently accepted into the group. TPP members are aiming to conclude the talks by November 2011.

LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Emma Jumper, a 16-year-old from Greene County, on Saturday was named 2010-11 Miss Arkansas Rice. She is the daughter of Tommy and Pam Jumper from Paragould.
Kelsy Dement of Craighead County was first runner-up and second runner-up was Haley Gregory of Monroe County. Representatives from five counties participated in the contest. Other contestants were Sage Ellis of Cross County and Anna Harris of Lee County.
Contestants were judged on rice promotion, rice cooking skills and knowledge of the rice industry. Jumper's recipe was "shrimp and creamy spinach feta rice."
The goal of the Miss Arkansas Rice program is to encourage youth interest in rice and publicize the importance of the Arkansas rice industry to the state's economy. The Arkansas Rice Council, in cooperation with the Arkansas Farm Bureau and the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, sponsors the annual contest.
