Louisiana Rice Farmers Rally at Capitol in Support of Rice Checkoff Programs
Rice farmers from across the state turned out to oppose changes to Louisiana's rice research and promotion checkoffs.
BATON ROUGE, LA -- A hearing before the Louisiana Senate Agriculture, Forestry, Aquaculture, and Rural Development Committee yesterday drew rice farmers from across the state. Most were there to oppose Senate Bill 656, legislation that would have changed major provisions of the research and promotion statutes.
"The equal-assessment checkoff referendums were voted on statewide on January 17, 2012, and supported overwhelmingly by an 85 percent margin for research and a 75 percent margin for promotion. Any attempt to reverse the will of this vast majority through legislation should not be allowed," Louisiana Rice Growers Association President John Owen said in his remarks to the committee.
After hearing testimony, the committee voted and the bill did not pass.

Louisiana Rice Blog Provides Real-Time Look at Rice Progression
CROWLEY, LA -- In the digital age, social media tools play an essential role in the dissemination of information. Twitter and Facebook make it easy to share content with carefully selected groups but blogs have the potential to communicate on a larger scale. The Louisiana State University (LSU) AgCenter Rice Research Station blog allows readers to follow the progression of a rice crop via a recently installed webcam.
"This blog is viewed by people around the world, and it allows them to compare how rice is grown here with other regions," said Steve Linscombe, director of the Rice Research Station. The webcam gives followers of the blog a more in-depth look at a six-acre field of rice planted in March to produce foundation seed.
The Louisiana Rice Insects blog also has proven to be a useful communications tool. "This blog allows me to provide timely field information to producers," said Natalie Hummel, extension entomologist, LSU associate professor and 2012 Rice Leadership Development Program class member. "Unlike social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook, the blog is open to the public which means anyone can respond and access the information."
