INDUARROZ Head Visits USA Rice Federation

Jeffrey Fajardo-Lopez, executive director of Induarroz, Colombia's association of rice millers, met with USA Rice Federation President and CEO Betsy Ward and USA Rice staff today to discuss implementation of the rice provisions of the U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement (TPA), and the overall rice situation in Colombia.
Rice is currently in short supply in Colombia, and the Colombian government recently opened a 35,000 metric ton extraordinary import quota. This quota is restricted to rice from the Andean countries surrounding Colombia, which is disappointing to USA Rice. However, U.S. rice will benefit from a duty-free 79,000 MT (milled rice equivalent) tariff rate quota (TRQ) once the U.S.-Colombia TPA comes into force on May 15. Induarroz members will likely be the importers of record for this TRQ.
All segments of the rice industries in Colombia and the United States are currently working to establish an export trading company in the United States that will manage the allocation of the TRQ. Mr. Fajardo will speak at the upcoming June convention of the USA Rice Millers' Association about Colombia's rice sector and the prospects for rice trade between the two countries under the TPA.

Turkish National Media Focuses on Health Advantages of U.S. Rice

Gunes newspaper
|
ISTANBUL, Turkey -- As a follow up to the USA Rice Daily article in March about Turkish online media coverage of U.S. rice, in April two major daily newspapers, two major food magazines and 58 online portals featured positive U.S. rice articles and recipes with colorful photos. The articles commended U.S.-grown rice for its "outstanding nutrients, great taste, nutritional benefits and convenience."

Turkiye newspaper
|
The two major newspapers "Gunes" and "Turkiye," each with a circulation of more than 400,000, and major online portals like "Hurriyet," "IHA," "Haberler" and "Son Dakika" each with 3 to 6 million readers daily, target consumers seeking news about healthy lifestyle and creative recipes. These media sources identified USA Rice in all articles and recipes and the estimated ad value exceeded $50,000 in April. The local U.S. rice brands appreciated USA Rice's efforts in promoting the health benefits of U.S. rice, with the aim of boosting consumption.
The U.S exported more than 74,000 MT (on a milled rice basis) to Turkey in 2011, valued at $45 million.
