U.S. Travelers to Cuba Would Be 'Beacons of Hope,' Chairman Says
WASHINGTON -- Americans who travel to Cuba would be "ambassadors for the democratic principles we hold dear," House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman (D-CA) said today at his committee's hearing about restrictions on travel by American citizens to Cuba.  It's time "to restore the right of Americans to travel to Cuba," Berman said.

The U.S. Treasury Department (Treasury) administers federal regulations regarding Cuba -- including travel -- under the 1963 Cuban Assets Control Regulations.  U.S. travel to Cuba is prohibited unless authorized by a general or specific Treasury license.

In September, Treasury authorized a new general license, under certain conditions, which provides for travel-related transactions "directly incident to the commercial marketing, sales negotiation, accompanied delivery, or servicing in Cuba of agricultural commodities, medicine, or medical devices that appear consistent with the Department of Commerce's export or re-export licensing policy."

The USA Rice Federation supports establishing normal commercial relations with Cuba including allowing for open trade-and-travel.  USA Rice also is helping to lead an industry coalition that seeks co-sponsors for a bipartisan trade-and-travel bill to be introduced by House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN) and senior committee member Rep. Jerry Moran (R-KS).

USA Rice Hosts Successful Tasting Event for Food Journalists
IP-SushiJournalists-091118HAMBURG, Germany -- The USA Rice Federation hosted a rice-tasting for members of the media on Nov. 10.  Twenty-seven food journalists attended the event, which focused on U.S sushi rice and wild rice.  The purpose of the function was to demonstrate the diversity of both U.S products.

Representatives from leading food magazines Fit for Fun, Essen + Trinken (Food and Drink) and Kochen & Genießen (Cook and Enjoy) were present.  Also in attendance was a journalist from the news magazine Stern.

The "open kitchen" concept chosen for the function provided the journalists the opportunity to prepare dishes themselves and offered a unique hands-on experience for the attendees.

The event was held in cooperation with the The Sushi Factory and the Alaska Seafood Council.  USA Rice distributed tote bags with brochures and recipes, Nishiki sushi rice by JFC and Euryza wild rice samples.
