Arkansas State Plant Board Approves Seed Testing for 2010
Marvin BadenLITTLE ROCK, AR -- The Arkansas State Plant Board today approved changes to the state's rice seed certification regulations to require the testing of rice seed for genetically engineered traits for the 2010 season.

"Removing the Liberty Link trait is critical to the economic health of the Arkansas rice industry," said Marvin Baden, chairman of USA Rice Federation's EU Trade Policy Subcommittee and senior VP of Producers' Rice Mill.

"The USA Rice Federation applauds the leadership of the Plant Board in removing the Liberty Link trait and supports today's action," said Bob Cummings, USA Rice senior vice president, who spoke at today's public hearing in addition to Baden and Greg Yielding of the Arkansas Rice Growers Association.

Latin American Market Prime for U.S. Rice Import Growth, Speakers Say
Latin America panelNEW ORLEANS -- Growing the Latin American market for U.S. rice imports hinges on increasing per-capita consumption in parts of the region, opening new markets, and removing trade restrictions with Cuba, according to the panelists participating in a session on Latin America held last week during the USA Rice Outlook Conference.

ADM Rice, Inc. Vice President Todd Burich joined Dr. Nester Gutierrez Aleman, president of the National Federation of Rice Producers in Colombia, and Germán Rosales Wybo, president of Mexican Importer Productos Verde Valle, to provide an overview of the region that captures more than 40 percent of U.S. exports.

Burich, chairman of USA Rice Federation's Latin America Trade Policy Subcommittee, said that despite the opportunity for growth in the market, there are considerable threats that could limit expansion, including the further development of the rice infrastructure in nearby rice-producing countries of Guyana and Suriname; increased anti-American sentiment in places such as Venezuela; and non-tariff trade barriers such as those for genetically-modified foods, mycotoxins and phytosanitary rules.

Gutierrez noted that the top four rice consumption markets in Latin American include Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil.

"Despite the fact that rice is produced in Latin America, U.S. rice imports are growing," he said.  "Millers love U.S. rice because the yields are better than the local rice."

USA Rice Federation Announces 2009 Retailers of the Year
promotional items The USA Rice Federation is proud to announce its 2009 Retailers of the Year.  This honor is given to the chain and independent retailers that display, merchandise and promote U.S.-grown rice in creative and profitable ways during September National Rice Month (NRM) and throughout the year.  USA Rice provides marketing materials to retailers such as premium items, point-of-sale materials, recipe brochures and photography to help retailers maximize their promotions.

The Chain Retailers of the Year are Stop & Shop Supermarket Company and Giant-Landover, divisions of Ahold USA.  The stores conducted a customized National Rice Month promotion -- including center-aisle rice displays that featured "Make It Easy, Make it Healthy, Make It Rice" bi-lingual signage and a postcard mailing highlighting U.S. rice brands carried in their stores to 50,000 of their top rice customers.

"Our customers love rice. We wanted to encourage them to support the U.S. rice industry by promoting American-grown products," Stop & Shop Supermarket Company and Giant-Landover Grocery Buyer Alex Ros said.

The Independent Retailer of the Year is Red Front Supermarkets of Harrisonburg, VA. The company achieved a 50 percent increase in rice sales by promoting 35 different rice products throughout their store with National Rice Month shelf tags and in weekly ad circulars.  Red Front also promoted NRM through social networking sites such as Facebook.
