Miss Arkansas Rice Shares Heart Healthy Message During American Heart Month
MS-Lydia_Holmes-100208 Miss Arkansas Rice Lydia Holmes is spreading the message about the heart health benefits of enriched white and whole-grain brown rice during American Heart Month.

In a special video message on arkansasricefarmers.org, Holmes touts the heart-healthy properties of rice -- including that it is cholesterol-, sodium-, and saturated fat-free, and is low in calories.  In addition to the health properties of rice, the public service announcement also advertises the versatility and great taste of rice -- which was ranked No. 1 among the top 10 economizing food staples by Real Simple magazine last year.  An audio message, distributed to Arkansas radio stations, carries a similar theme and is designed to encourage consumers to eat rice as part of a healthy diet.

"American Heart Month is a great time to spread the message about the advantages of a healthful food that is one of the state's top agricultural crops: rice," Holmes said.  "It's important that we encourage everyone to maintain a healthy lifestyle not just during American Heart Month but all year long."

Lydia Holmes is the daughter of Byron and Brenda Holmes of Forrest City, AR.

EPA Water Office Has New Deputy Administrator
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last week announced that Nancy Stoner joined the agency as the the No. 2 official at the Office of Water.  This is Stoner's second stint with EPA.  From 1997-1999, she was director of policy analysis in the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance.

From 1999 until joining EPA for the second time, Stoner had been an attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), most recently serving as co-director of NRDC's Water Program.  In this capacity, she worked to protect rivers, lakes, and coastal waters from contaminated storm water, sewer overflows, factory farms, and other sources of water pollution, and led NRDC's efforts to clean up and restore Washington's Anacostia River, according to EPA.

Before joining EPA in 1997, Stoner worked as a trial attorney in the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.  She is a 1986 graduate of Yale Law School and a 1982 graduate of the University of Virginia.
