Rice Grading Information

The USDA Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) provides grading standards for brown and milled rices which include long, medium, & short grain rices, mixed milled rice and mixed brown rice. Descriptions for milling degree (extent of bran removed from the rice) are included in the milling degree document. Links to USDA GIPSA standards are:

Information Commonly Required by Rice Mills for Quotation

Each U.S. rice mill has its own method of providing quotations on any type of rice a buyer may require. The following are commonly required items:

Grade/quality: USDA No. 1-6; Percentage broken content (for example, 4%, 10%, etc.)
Type: long grain, medium grain, short grain.
Milling and form: Rough (paddy), brown (cargo), regular-milled, parboiled, etc. Also degree of milling (lightly milled, well milled, hard milled).
Quantity: Total quantity of shipment.
Delivery time-frame: Shipped at once, partial shipments, dates required for shipping, etc.
Packaging: Bulk (loose), 50 kg bag, 100 lb bag, cartons, poly bags, jute bags, etc. Also, printing required.
Quotation information: FOB, FAS, CIF, C&F, etc.
Name and full address of inquirer and type of company.
