BATON ROUGE, LA – Last week, USA Rice partnered with Louisiana State University (LSU) for the University’s Thankful Celebration, an on-campus food festival that brings together global food traditions, student creativity, and campus-wide community support. At this year’s event, USA Rice teamed up with LSU dining services to host an International Rice Dish Challenge and invited student teams to submit and develop rice-based recipes inspired by global cuisines. The winning recipes then were made exclusively with Louisiana-grown rice and sampled by more than 5,000 students as they took part in the food festival.
As part of the festival offerings, USA Rice hosted a booth where students could learn about Louisiana-grown and U.S.-grown rice directly from staff from the Louisiana Farm Bureau and USA Rice. At the booth, USA Rice shared key messages around sustainability, nutrition, and the role of U.S.-grown rice across global cuisines. Students were exposed to Louisiana rice brands and received 1-pound bags of long grain, while learning how U.S. rice compliments a budget-friendly, balanced meal plan suitable for campus life. Giveaways were available for students including rice stickers, kitchen conversion magnets, and promotional items provided by Louisiana rice brands.
“This student food festival was an excellent opportunity to showcase rice’s versatility across cultures to an engaged student body and position it as a familiar way to explore new cuisines,” said Cameron Jacobs, USA Rice vice president of domestic promotion. “The festival also provided a great opportunity to highlight local rice brands available throughout the state to the age group that we know is most interested in learning where their food comes from and most willing to try new foods and rice varietals.”
In addition to promoting the U.S.-grown difference directly to college students and festival attendees, USA Rice also made a donation to the LSU Food Pantry with rice donated by Louisiana-based brands.
“Thank you to LSU dining services for their passion behind domestic rice and thank you to Cajun Country, 4Sisters, and Supreme Rice for their participation and donations to this rice-centric campus event,” said Jacobs.
