ARLINGTON, VA – It is widely agreed that rice is among the most manipulated and interfered with commodities on the world stage. USA Rice Vice President of International Trade Peter Bachmann joins
The Rice Stuff podcast to explain why and to provide some insight into what he and the industry can and are doing about it.
“Peter shoulders a great responsibility for the U.S. rice industry – working to remove trade barriers and open new markets for our rice, while sometimes fighting a rearguard action as exporting rice countries attempt to gain unfair access to our market,” said Michael Klein, vice president of communications and domestic promotion, and one of the podcast hosts. “His portfolio and understanding of varied markets around the world are quite interesting.”
Bachmann talked about recent victories in China and Brazil and outlined new potential opportunities in markets like the Philippines and Nigeria, and discussed trade cheats and the World Trade Organization.
“I appreciated Peter’s analysis of new trade agreements, such as the USMCA that replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement and the CPTPP that replaced the Trans Pacific Partnership, and what the impacts would be on U.S. rice,” said show co-host Lesley Dixon.
Along the theme of cheats and leveling the playing field, Klein and Dixon also talked about “the homer effect” in sports refereeing and they set the record straight on a few facts from an earlier episode and revealed their biggest fan to date.
