WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Yesterday, Representative Julia Letlow was sworn in to represent Louisiana’s Fifth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Louisiana’s Fifth covers 24 parishes and the northeast Louisiana rice-producing region.

The seat held last Congress by now retired Rep. Ralph Abraham (R-LA) was set to be filled by Rep.-elect Luke Letlow, the late husband of now Rep. Julia Letlow, who tragically and unexpectedly passed away five days prior to being sworn-in.

House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Glenn ‘G.T.’ Thompson announced yesterday that Rep. Letlow will serve on the committee.

“USA Rice congratulates Congresswoman Letlow, and we look forward to working with her as we advocate for rice industry priorities,” said Ben Mosely, USA Rice vice president of government affairs. “Her serving on the House Agriculture Committee is a huge win for the Louisiana rice industry.”

There are still several vacancies remaining in the U.S. House, including former Rep. Cedric Richmond (D) in Louisiana’s Second Congressional District. Richmond resigned from Congress earlier this year to assume a role in President Joe Biden’s administration.  The Special election for that seat is headed for a runoff, scheduled for April 24.
