WASHINGTON, DC – Summer in this city means interns, not the medical sort, but young people from across the country here to spend a couple months learning how government works.
“We look forward to hosting our interns every summer,” said Peter Bachmann, USA Rice vice president of policy & government affairs. “They bring a fresh perspective and we rely on their youthful exuberance to give a jolt of energy to what can sometimes feel like endless days on Capitol Hill.”
This year’s summer government affairs intern is Alex Smith, a senior at Texas A&M University who is pursuing a B.S. in Agricultural Economics, with a concentration in finance and real estate.
Originally from Canadian, Texas, Smith has a background in agriculture and a passion for public policy. He works part-time at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and has been accepted into the Agricultural and Natural Resource Policy Program (ANRP), which allows him to accrue college credit hours through his internship.
“I expect this experience at USA Rice will broaden both my horizons and my skill set,” Smith said. “I am eager to learn more about the integration of agriculture and public policy, and how the application of that knowledge can help me make an impact on communities like the one I grew up in.”
