ARLINGTON, VA – On Episode 106 of The Rice Stuff podcast, USA Rice Vice President of Domestic Promotion Cameron Jacobs returns to the show to talk nutrition policy with co-hosts Lesley Dixon and Michael Klein.

Federal nutrition is a complex and sometimes highly contentious area of policymaking, which is why Jacobs and the domestic promotion team work tirelessly to make sure rice is properly represented in the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s decision-making process as they update their recommendations.

“Rice plays a large role in our collective eating patterns and in federal nutrition programs,” said Jacobs.  “It’s the job of USA Rice to intensely advocate on behalf of rice to ensure that rice in all forms continues to be federally recognized as an important component in achieving and maintaining healthy diet patterns.”

Jacobs covers the dietary guidelines, what they are, how they are developed, the decisionmakers behind them, and how they pertain to the rice industry – as well as the recently published federal definition for "healthy" and what it means for product marketing and packaging.

This episode also contemplates the question, “are potatoes a grain?”  According to Jacobs, for the Committee, and essentially the entire world, the answer is no.
