• U.S. Rice on China Retaliation List

    The Trump administration announced on Friday an additional 25 percent import duty on $34 billion worth of high tech imports from China. China immediately responded by announcing a similar duty hike on $34 billion worth of U.S. imports, including U.S. rice. Both countries’ actions are effective July 6, 2018.

  • Amidst Uncertainty on Trade with China, Rice Sees Possibilities

  • USA Rice Delegation in China Presses for Imports to Begin

    Leaders from USA Rice were in China last week to deliver a simple message – nearly 30 U.S. facilities have completed China’s extensive food safety questionnaires and it’s now time for Chinese officials to schedule an inspection visit, the next step in fulfilling the promise of U.S. market access when the two countries signed a phytosanitary protocol for U.S. milled rice last July.

  • The U.S. and China Trade Actions

    The U.S. and China have exchanged salvos adding fuel to fears of escalating trade sanctions between the two largest global economies. Yesterday, the Trump Administration announced another action in the President’s efforts to “rebalance the U.S.-China trade relationship,” and China began the retaliation process to Trump’s previous action on steel and aluminum imports.

    Last week, Chinese news agencies excitedly reported on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granting approval to an experimental genetically modified rice strain, Huahui-1. USA Rice does not share their excitement and does not want the GM rice to enter the United States.

    China, the world’s largest producer and consumer of rice, is focused on increasing its already large share of rice cultivation and exports. In 2016/17, China’s milled rice exports nearly tripled from the previous year driven by large shipments to many African countries on commercial terms as well as for donations. Ending stocks are forecast to increase to 6.1 million tons to 75.53 million tons (milled rice basis) more than 52 percent of annual usage and about 13 times the size of the projected 2017 U.S. rice harvest.

  • USA Rice Explores E-Commerce Potential in Chinese Market

    While the U.S. rice industry anxiously awaits entry into the Chinese market, USA Rice is reaching out to various importers and sellers of rice in the e-commerce business there. E-commerce is a huge platform in China; last year, there were USD$744 billion in ecommerce sales, a 40 percent increase from the prior year. Alibaba controls about 60 percent of that market – the next largest company is JD.com with a 25 percent share.

  • U.S., China Sign Historic Rice Protocol
