  • New USDA Undersecretary for Trade Travels to Colombia, Meets with USA Rice

    USA Rice’s South and Central America representative, Ernesto Baron, met with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Undersecretary for Trade & Foreign Agricultural Affairs Ted McKinney during his visit to Colombia last week. McKinney’s trip to Colombia marks one of the undersecretary’s first visits to a trading partner since being appointed to the newly created role in October.

  • Colombia Chef Tour in Miami Cut Short by Hurricane Irma

    Earlier this summer, USA Rice held professional chef competitions in Bogota, Barranquilla, and Cali, Colombia where hundreds of chefs competed to claim first prize. The top winners from each city recently traveled here to participate in a hotel, restaurant, and institutional (HRI) tour that included a stop at Florida International University’s Restaurant Management Program where they received an overview of HRI trends in America, with an emphasis on U.S. rice.

  • Colombia Lifts Import Restrictions on U.S. Rough Rice

    Yesterday, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer formally announced the lifting of all remaining import restrictions in Colombia for U.S. rough rice. Two days ago, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) released the phytosanitary certificate for rough rice which outlines required fumigation measures. This follows on the heels of Colombia rescinding restrictions on U.S. paddy rice and permitting its entrance into all maritime ports.

  • U.S. Paddy Allowed Unhindered Access into Colombia

    On June 6, 2017, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) published “Official Resolution #6705 of 2017” which removed a previous resolution that restricted imported U.S. paddy rice to the port of Barranquilla. The previous resolution also implemented phytosanitary measures for the transportation of U.S. paddy rice and for the management of residues (such as husks) after being milled in Colombia. These mitigation procedures and restrictions to one port in Colombia are now null and void.

  • End in Sight for Colombia’s Restrictions on U.S. Paddy

    It’s been a long journey with too many delays, but the government of Colombia looks close to removing longstanding import restrictions on U.S. paddy. Colombian plant health officials have acknowledged to their U.S. counterparts that the fungal disease Tilletia Horrida is present in Colombia. The presence of this disease in U.S. rice country has been used as an excuse by Colombia to restrict imports of U.S. rough rice to only the port of Barranquilla and processing in surrounding mills, and to require fumigation of the cargo before shipment.
