• FABEX Show Features Sushi Made From U.S. Rice

    USA Rice participated in FABEX 2018, one of the major trade shows targeting foodservice and deli/take-out operators held at the Tokyo Big Site earlier this month. The USA Rice booth featured various new style sushi menus to introduce innovative usages of U.S medium grain to the more than 78,000 visitors, including hand-shaped sushi rice prepared using a special sushi roll making machine.

  • Training Day for Foreign Ag Service

    Last week, USA Rice participated in a “Meet the Cooperators” seminar series led by the U.S. Agricultural Export Development Council (USAEDC) to provide training to approximately 30 new foreign service personnel and other staff at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). These annual seminars provide opportunities for local trade associations to educate USDA staff about our organizations and how we work together to increase exports of rice.

  • Raising the U.S. Rice Profile in Guatemala

    Last week Asiha Grigsby, USA Rice manager of international promotion, and USA Rice contractors here, Ernesto Baron and Chef Javier Rodríguez, met with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Counselor Todd Drennan, and Attaché Sean Cox for a roundtable discussion of market access and promotional activities in the region. Mr. Drennan led the group in a conversation exploring the opportunities and challenges for U.S. rice as compared to corn - the most consumed grain in the region.

  • Overseas USA Rice Partners with Importers to Boost Sales, Foster Relationships

    USA Rice conducts more than 2,700 promotional activities in almost 25 countries each year to support the sales of U.S. rice abroad. Rice industry funds help augment the money received from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Market Access Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) program to conduct these activities, and an excellent indicator of the activities’ effectiveness is the willingness of local brands to also contribute their own funds to the efforts.

  • American-Made Sushi Gets Great Reviews in Japan

    At FOODEX Japan here last week, USA Rice hosted a taste-testing demonstration featuring a new style of sushi called Inari where the rice is wrapped in fried bean curd. The Inari sushi was made with U.S. medium grain rice, flavored and colored with purple yam, vinegar, and beets.

  • USA Rice Offers Aid to Mexico’s Most Vulnerable Populations

    Spreading the word about U.S. rice is not only an opportunity to create global partnerships but also a strategic element in the fight against hunger for the world’s most vulnerable populations. In several major Mexican metropolitan cities, U.S. rice was used to inform and nourish as part of outreach by community meal programs here that are facilitated by the Mexican government’s Ministry of Social Development and Comedores Comunitarios (community kitchens).

  • Undersecretary McKinney Visits USA Rice Booth at Gulfood Show

    Undersecretary of Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Ted McKinney attended this year’s Gulfood Show here and spent time at the USA Rice booth together with the local U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Ag Service (FAS) Counselor Kurt Seifarth. USA Rice’s Hartwig Schmidt briefed them about the organization‘s promotional activities in the Middle East and European region.

  • Study Shows U.S. Outspent and Falling Behind on Ag Export Promotion

    A study by Informa Economics, IEG on the competitiveness of U.S. export development programs in relation to other countries shows the European Union and others spent close to $1 billion on agricultural export promotion in 2016, outspending the United States 4 to 1. Competitor spending increased 70 percent since 2011, while U.S. export promotion declined by about 12 percent over the same period.

  • Japan, Mexico, UK, China, Jordan Priorities for USA Rice 2018 International Promotion Areas

    Leadership from the USA Rice International Promotion Committee and the USA Rice Council met here this week to examine the current export picture for U.S.-grown rice and discuss future marketing and trade policy programs. While U.S. rice faces tariff and non-tariff barriers in many markets, the group endorsed USA Rice’s proposed strategy for the coming year with some adjustments to ensure maximum impact.
