• New USDA Proposed Nutrition Rule May Present Opportunity for Rice

    Yesterday, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Kevin Concannon announced a proposed rule designed to provide Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants increased access to healthy foods by requiring stores that accept SNAP to stock a wider array of food choices.

  • Next Step in Normalization of Relations: U.S., Cuba Agree to Commercial Flights

    The United States and Cuba signed an agreement this morning to resume commercial air traffic for the first time in five decades. U.S. airlines can now start bidding on routes for as many as 110 U.S.-Cuba daily flights - more than five times the current number. All flights operating between the two countries today are charters.

  • New Tender for US Origin Rice Follows USA Rice Technical Seminar

    The Ministry of Trade of Iraq has issued a new tender here for 90,000 metric tons of rice specifically of U.S. origin. Bids are due in 10 days, and while the offer of a tender does not guarantee a sale, the move was welcomed in the United States.

  • President Releases FY 2017 Budget Recommendations, Not Very Ag-Friendly

    The President’s recommendations for the Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) funding were up in some program areas and down in others with net cuts to the Department’s activities by more than $4.5 billion, down seven percent from the 2016 level. Crop insurance was once again a target of the Administration’s proposal with $18 billion worth of cuts over ten years. Specifically, the budget proposal suggests a 10 percent reduction in premium subsidies for policy holders electing the harvest price option and additional savings would be generated by reforming prevented planting coverage.

  • Colombia Set to Import 200,000 MT Above Quota by July; Origin Unclear

    Last week, USA Rice held high level meetings here with representatives of Induarroz (National Federation of Industrial Rice), Fedearroz (National Federation of Rice Producers), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service. Of utmost concern was Colombia’s announcement that it would import 200,000 MT of rice this year, above and beyond this year’s tariff rate quota import amount of 94,209 metric tons from the United States.
