  • USDA Projects Increase in U.S. Rice Production

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its first projections for major crops for the 2018/19 crop years today, and according to the report, total rice production is forecast at 217.8 million hundred-weight (cwt), up sharply from 178.2 million cwt a year earlier, based on a 17-percent increase in planted acreage to 2.88 million acres. Higher expected returns for rice at planting compared with alternative crops, primarily corn and soybeans, is responsible for the projected increase in rice area.

  • USA Rice Meets with Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries

    Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, (MAFF) along with representatives from the Embassy of Japan, visited USA Rice yesterday. As part of a regular visit, the two sides discussed the U.S.-Japan rice trade and reviewed the progress of Japan’s rice imports in the current Japan fiscal year (April-March). The two sides also discussed prospects for Japan’s remaining import tenders.

  • Study Shows U.S. Outspent and Falling Behind on Ag Export Promotion

    A study by Informa Economics, IEG on the competitiveness of U.S. export development programs in relation to other countries shows the European Union and others spent close to $1 billion on agricultural export promotion in 2016, outspending the United States 4 to 1. Competitor spending increased 70 percent since 2011, while U.S. export promotion declined by about 12 percent over the same period.

  • Arkansas Rice Farmers Get Annual Industry Report

    The Arkansas Rice Council and Arkansas Rice Farmers held their annual meeting and trade show yesterday here at the First National Bank Arena. During the program, USA Rice President & CEO Betsy Ward spoke about USA Rice efforts on behalf of the industry, keynote speaker Governor Asa Hutchinson spoke about his support and plans for Arkansas agriculture, and a panel discussed agricultural crop burning.
