The House voted today to head off a possible rail strike by compelling the 12 rail unions to accept a Tentative Agreement that had been rejected by four of the unions.

Earlier this month, USA Rice joined a broad coalition of organizations thanking President Biden for his efforts to avert a rail shutdown by creating the Presidential Emergency Board to facilitate negotiations. The impending crisis has reached a new stage with the President calling on Congress to exercise its authority to avoid a rail shutdown.

“It is perhaps unfortunate it has come to this, but it was time for Congress to use its authority to prevent a rail shutdown that would cripple our economy as we head into the holiday season and as farmers make plans an purchasing for next year,” said Peter Bachmann, vice president of government affairs for USA Rice. “The railroads are too vital to our nation to weather a shutdown.”

The deadline for Congress to act is December 9 and the bill now moves on to the U.S. Senate.
