Haiti is a small island nation with a population of 10.6 million. Their official languages are French and Creole. In 2010, a 7.0 earthquake devastated the capital city of Port au Prince and much of the surrounding area. The quake killed an estimated 300,000 Haitians and left at least 1.5 million others homeless and without resources such as drinking water and access to health care of any kind. A natural disaster of that magnitude had not been experienced in Haiti for the last 200 years. The Haitian economy has suffered greatly since that time and is struggling to recover. About 40% of Haitians earn their living in small-scale subsistence farming.
USA Rice Activities
USA Rice has been active in Haiti since 2013, promoting the consumption of rice. Most Haitians consume rice on a regular basis and prefer U.S. origin. USA Rice’s nationwide marketing program has consisted of sponsoring local soccer teams, an auto car rally which traveled throughout the country and filming TV shows utilizing local Haitian chefs cooking dishes utilizing U.S. rice.
