SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – Myungrang Hotdogs (MH), the Korean corn dogs deep fried in rice flour, are now available at Costco stores here, thanks to a promotion partnership with USA Rice.

“MH switched out the rice flour in their batter from domestic to U.S. medium grain a couple of years ago,” said Jim Guinn, USA Rice director of Asia promotion programs.  “It was a great move, facilitated by USA Rice, and since then, the MH franchise business has taken off with locations throughout South Korea and across the U.S.”

In 2022, MH developed two new products for the wholesale market, “MH Rice Hotdog” and “MH Mini Rice Hotdog,” being sold at 18 Costco outlets nationwide.

“USA Rice Korea designed and executed an in-store promotion that included a booth staffed by sales assistants wearing ThinkRice t-shirts who handed out MH product samples,” said Guinn. “During the four-month long promotion at Costco, MH sold more than 25,000 of the rice hotdog packages, utilizing 21 MT of U.S. rice flour.”

South Korea is the second largest export destination in Asia for U.S. rice.  Korea has imported, on average, 152,000 MT annually for the last three years, valued at more than $137 million per year.  At the same time, the unit value has risen from $820 per ton in 2020 to $1,320 per ton in 2022.

“In Korean, ‘myungrang’ means ‘cheerful,’ and that certainly describes how we all feel about the successful USA Rice collaboration with MH,” Guinn concluded.
