Earlier this month, USA Rice participated in the National Cultural Day celebration, this year dedicated to the vibrant Guayabera, a traditional shirt or dress that holds deep cultural significance in the region. The event took place at the Cuban Embassy, where the lobby was adorned with various examples of Guayaberas, highlighting their intricate designs and the stories they carry.
The celebration kicked off with heartfelt words from Cuban Ambassador Lianys Torres Rivera, who welcomed attendees and conveyed an urgent message of support in reestablishing trade relations with the United States by removing the embargo that has been in place for more than 60 years. Ambassador Torres also emphasized the importance of preserving traditions like the Guayabera, which symbolizes not only fashion but also the rich history of the Cuban people.
Following the ambassador’s remarks, guests were treated to a musical performance by renowned Cuban artist Trovador Mauricio Figueiral. Attendees enjoyed a full reception featuring "Moro," a traditional Cuban dish of rice and beans. The dish, like the Guyabera, embodies the fusion of flavors and cultures that define Cuban cuisine.
As USA Rice continues to support cultural exchange and appreciation, events like this serve as a reminder of the powerful bonds that unite us through tradition, music, and food.
Private sector rice imports are growing in Cuba. To date, in 2024 the U.S. exported 1050 MT of rice to Cuba, up 50% from 2023.
