ARLINGTON, VA – USA Rice welcomes another summer intern, Philip Haynie IV, who joined the Government Affairs team this week.  He grew up on his family’s grain farming operation in Reedville, Virginia, and has been introduced to the rice industry through his work at his family’s Arkansas River Rice Mill in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Philip is a junior at Hampton University, pursuing a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Economics.  As co-captain of Hampton’s Debate and Forensics Team and a member of the Political Science Club, Philip is primed for advocacy work on Capitol Hill.

“The importance of agriculture has been emphasized to me all my life as the root of civilization,” says Philip.  “That mantra fueled my interest in how public policy impacts our food system, and I know working at USA Rice will give me real insight into what we can do to influence outcomes that effect our industry.”

In what little free time Philip has he enjoys cooking, kayaking, and perfecting his fluency in Spanish.  He also has done some amateur filmmaking and directed a series of short films about his chocolate lab named Grizz, who, as it turns out, is a star made for the camera.

“Philip’s agricultural background combined with his education in political science and diverse interests will bring unique strengths to our team this summer,” said Peter Bachmann, USA Rice vice president of policy & government affairs.  “We’re looking forward to having him pursue some challenging projects.”
