ARLINGTON, VA – One of the many presentations at last month’s 40th Rice Technical Working Group meeting that captured USA Rice Vice President of Communications & Strategic Development Michael Klein was Dr. Lanier Nalley’s presentation, “Precise Nitrogen Recommendations Improve Economic and Environmental Outcomes in Rice Production.”
Dr. Nalley, University of Arkansas professor and director of the Fryar Price Risk Management Center of Excellence, joined Klein for
Episode 110 of
The Rice Stuff to share his research into the return on investment (ROI) of the Arkansas Rice check-off program.
“I know growers have to watch every penny going out – especially with the farm economy what it currently is,” said Klein. “But Dr. Nalley and his colleagues are able to demonstrate that not only is the check-off putting actual money in farmers’ pockets today, it’s helping them avoid significant future outlays. The ROI is pretty impressive.”
Nalley’s study looked at three types of benefits: yield enhancing, cost reducing, and ecosystem services.
“Arkansas growers paying into the check-off should feel better about their participation in the program after listening,” said Klein. “And if you know a farmer who doesn’t participate, or complains about it – send them this episode!”
All of that, plus critical thinking skills, life cycle analysis, Michael’s firsthand memories of Clinton versus Gingrich, and staff changes at the podcast.
