WASHINGTON, DC – This week, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins launched the inaugural Great American Farmers Market here on the National Mall, just in front of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) headquarters.
The market ran for several hours daily, from Sunday, August 3, through Friday, August 9, and each day was themed and featured special events in addition to the daily vendors from throughout the U.S. selling agricultural products. Themes included America Grows, MAHA Monday, Faith & Fellowship, Forests & Firefighters, America the Beautiful, and Farmer First Friday.
Rice was proudly among those represented at the event, with a booth featuring 4Sisters branded rice from Kennedy Rice Mill, led by their CEO Meryl Kennedy Farr. They sold two-pound bags of their organic long grain white and brown rice, jasmine rice, and their japonica sushi rice.
In a statement, Rollins said that the Farmers Market was established “to honor our agricultural heritage and stand shoulder to shoulder with today’s producers who continue in that tradition to feed and fuel our nation.”
Throughout the course of the week, tens of thousands of visitors passed through the market while the heavy summer tourist crowds continue in the city.
“I appreciate Secretary Rollins’ elevation of American agriculture and her thoughtfulness to host this great event to showcase American agricultural products, like our rice, as part of the President’s 250th Anniversary celebratory agenda,” said Kennedy Farr. “The team representing 4Sisters here was able to educate hundreds of current and future customers about the importance of the U.S. rice industry with views of the Washington Monument on one side and the U.S. Capitol on the other.”
