ARLINGTON, VA – The futures market is little known and less understood, but the rough rice futures contract is one of the most valuable tools available to everyone in the rice industry.  Host Michael Klein spent the better part of a week last year interviewing key players in the rice futures sector and then several months unpacking everything they tried to teach him, including reading the dense “bible” of the futures markets and watching the 1983 film, “Trading Places.”

The result is the latest episode of The Rice Stuff podcast, “Making the Market: The Story of Rice Futures,” available now.

The episode takes a deep dive into what futures are, how they are supposed to work, and the history of the rice contract.  Guests include former USA Rice Chair Brian King, CME Group’s Fred Seamon, the “godfather” of the USA Rice Merchants, Randy McNeil, and the man who was in the futures ring on day one back in 1981 and still trades today, Jerry Morris.

“This is a complex topic and we wanted to make it accessible so we took a very different approach,” said Klein.  “Rather then just question and then answer we put this together in a documentary format.  I hope folks enjoy it and most of all, I hope, like Randy says, ‘the lightbulb comes on.’”
