WASHINGTON, DC -- According to a report released today by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), area planted to rice in 2022 is expected to total 2.45 million acres, down 3 percent from 2021.  Many industry experts think these statistics are overstated because of a variety of factors including skyrocketing input costs and low commodity prices for rice.

Arkansas, the largest long grain rice-producing state, is expected to decrease long grain acres by 1 percent from the previous year.  Compared with last year, medium grain acres are expected to decrease 8 percent, and short grain acres are expected to decrease 28 percent.

California, the largest medium and short grain-producing state, is expected to decrease medium grain planted area by 14 percent and decrease short grain planted area by 29 percent in 2022.

“We realize these numbers are subject to change as the planting season progresses and conditions fluctuate,” said USA Rice President & CEO Betsy Ward.  “This initial report is just a  baseline the industry uses as a guide.”
