BASTROP, LA – Last week, USA Rice staff participated in the Model Farm Field Day at Armstrong Farms here.  This event, hosted in collaboration with the National Black Growers Council and the Morehouse Black Farmers & Landowners Association, provided a unique opportunity for farmers, industry professionals, and community members to come together and learn from one another.

The festivities began the evening before with a welcome dinner where participants gathered to share a meal, enjoy each other's company, and dance the night away, which set the tone for a field day filled with camaraderie and shared learning.

Unfortunately, due to constant rainfall, the event's venue had to be moved from Armstrong Farms to the nearby county fairgrounds.  Despite the change in location, the spirit of the day held fast as the Armstrong family, led by father-daughter duo Harper and Ashley Armstrong, gave a slide show in lieu of an on-site tour that showcased their innovative approaches to row crop production, including corn, soybeans, and rice.  The Armstrongs also highlighted their recent venture into vegetable production, a strategic move to address the food desert in their community.

In addition to the slide show presentation, the field day featured informative sessions on a range of topics.  Representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) shared valuable insights into their programs and strategies, while experts discussed best practices for managing heirs' property—a critical issue for many landowners.  The event also included drone demonstrations and updates on the Climate Smart Initiative, providing attendees with a glimpse into the future of farming.

USA Rice staff were at the organization’s booth throughout the day, contributing to the lively and educational atmosphere by sharing conservation facts, encouraging farmers to incorporate rice into their crops, and distributing USA Rice swag including pens, hats, and branded license plates.

“The Model Farm Field Day was more than an educational event; it was a celebration of community resilience, innovation, and the shared commitment to a brighter future for all,” said Asiha Grigsby, USA Rice senior director of international promotion in the Western Hemisphere who helped staff the booth.  “The collaboration between the Armstrong family, the National Black Growers Council, the Morehouse Black Farmers & Landowners Association, and participating exhibitors including USA Rice exemplifies the strength and potential of cooperative efforts in advancing sustainable agriculture.”
