WASHINGTON, DC – At the beginning of a new Congress, both the House and the Senate adopt organizing resolutions that determine the operation of both chambers for the next two years.  These organizing resolutions include specifics about the number of Members from each party that sit on committees and which Members will sit on committees.

The 118th Congress has gotten to work and leaders in both the House and Senate have announced committee assignments for nearly all Members.  Prior to this announcement, committees had been able to meet, but only in a limited capacity with holdover membership from the 117th Congress.

Most notably, Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) will continue to serve as chair and Sen. John Boozman (R-AR) will serve as ranking member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry.

After their organizational meeting this week, the House Committee on Agriculture will be chaired by Rep. Glenn “G.T.” Thompson (R-PA) and Rep. David Scott (D-GA) will serve as ranking member.

Of additional importance to the rice industry, Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO) will chair the House Ways and Means Committee responsible for oversight of trade, tax, and other matters.  Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA) will serve as ranking member.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) will chair the House Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, and Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-GA) will serve as ranking member.  On the Senate side, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) will continue to serve as chair and Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND) will serve as ranking member of the Senate Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee.
