ARLINGTON, VA --
The Rice Stuff podcast talked with producers about how they grow organic rice on
Episode 60, but on the newest episode,
#71, the gang sits down with researchers to examine organics using a “systems approach” that includes every aspect of production.
On a recent trip to a Texas rice conference, co-host Lesley Dixon talked with Dr. Alvaro Durand-Morat, assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at University of Arkansas, and Bob Whitney, a Regents Fellow & extension organic program specialist at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, about the work they are doing on the agronomics and economics of organic rice farming. They shared the challenges and opportunities organics pose from their side of the house.
Then Dr. Steve Linscombe joined Lesley and co-host Michael Klein to discuss his view on the topic of organics, including the different ways to consider water use when it comes to rice production and consumer cost elasticity.
“It seems the availability of organic rice cropland remains the most significant hurdle for producers,” said Klein. “It was interesting hearing what the researchers are looking at to address these and other concerns."
