WASHINGTON, DC – The USA Rice World Market Price (WMP) Subcommittee convened here yesterday for its second meeting of 2024 to discuss supply and demand, rice stocks, and planting projections.

On review of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) projected plantings data, subcommittee members were split, with some states agreeing with the USDA projections and others forecasting a greater number of acres planted in their states.

Following the WMP meeting, teams from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Economic Research Service (ERS), and World Agricultural Outlook Board (WAOB) were on hand to provide updates from their respective departments.  Subcommittee Chair Keith Glover shared feedback regarding NASS statistics, and reviewed the areas where members thought changes could be made.  Staff from the USDA Farm Production and Conservation division were also in attendance to talk about the upcoming milling cost survey distributed each year by the agency.

To round out the day, USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) Associate Administrator Brooke Jamison welcomed questions from the group and covered topics such as the trade deficit, market diversification, the new RAPP program, and food aid.

“We are happy to be back in Washington, DC, checking in on government policies and programs,” said Glover.  “Meeting with our partners at USDA is an invaluable opportunity for both sides and, as always, we are grateful for their input and feedback.”
