ARLINGTON, VA – USA Rice recently released the annual U.S. Rice Domestic Usage Report, tracking domestic shipments and consumption of U.S. milled rice from August 2023 through July 2024. This year’s report maintains recent enhancements including shipments of rice flour to industrial food processors, as well as consumer research data that gives a clearer picture of who is eating rice, where they are consuming it, and where they are buying it. These changes provide better representation of the industry, and a more accurate picture of which types and how much rice is consumed in the U.S.
Twenty-four companies participated in this year’s report, capturing 107.6 million hundredweights (cwt) of rice shipped to domestic and foreign markets, an increase of 6.3 percent versus the 2022-23 market year (MY). According to the report, 73.2 million cwt of rice was shipped domestically, an increase of 5.5 percent compared to last year. Of that, 54.7 percent is for direct food use, and 45.3 percent for processed foods like pet food, beer, saké, and rice flour. This distribution shifted slightly in the direction of processed food compared to MY 2022-23, when direct food use stood at 62.2 percent and processed foods at 37.8 percent.
“The U.S. Rice Domestic Usage Report is a vital resource for the rice industry,” said Alexandra Welisch of National Rice Company, chair of the USA Rice DUR Subcommittee. “Each year we strive to compile a thorough and informative report, and the participation of USA Rice members throughout the country helps us achieve that goal.”
