VIDALIA, LA – More than 175 people gathered here late last week for the first
National Black Growers Council (NBGC) Model Farm Series field day of the year. Each year NBGC hosts multiple field days for multiple commodities across the south, and this year’s first field day was hosted at Nelson Farms, focused on rice, corn, cotton, and soybeans.
The day kicked off at the Vidalia Conference and Convention Center with a welcome from Willis Nelson of Nelson Farms who also serves as an NBGC board member. Nelson introduced the NBGC new executive director, Dawn Mellion.
“I am so pleased that we are able to host our first Model Farm Series field day in my home state of Louisiana” Mellion said. “The primary goal of the Field Day Series is to share information while connecting row crop growers with each other as well as exposing youth to the vast array of opportunities in the agricultural sector. “
Attendees then loaded on buses and traveled to Nelson Farms for in-field presentations by representatives from Bayer, Corteva, and Syngenta who shared their latest crop technologies.
The stop at the rice field included updates from rice consultant Hank Jones, and Kyle Soileau, Louisiana rice stewardship coordinator for Ducks Unlimited. Soileau talked about the multiple conservation practices that could be implemented in a Louisiana rice field, such as nutrient management, pest management, winter flooding, and more. Emily Woodall, USA Rice senior manager of rice conservation services, then provided an update on the rebranded Advancing Markets for Producers program.
Buses then traveled back to the Vidalia Convention Center to allow everyone a break from the heat to listen to a short presentation by Louisiana State Representative Travis Johnson.
Next, Nelson called on several of the event sponsors that were present to give an overview of some of the services they provide. He, along with NBGC Chair P.J. Haynie, thanked the sponsors for their support in making the Model Field Day events possible, allowing growers to get together and exchange ideas and practices that everyone can find benefit from when returning home to their own farms.
