BIGGS, CA – More than 200 people from the rice industry came to the rice research station here earlier this week for the annual field day as well as the annual business meeting for the grower-owners of the California Cooperative Rice Research Foundation.
During the annual business meeting, Chair Burt Manuel discussed the strength of the California rice industry while also noting the many challenges faced by farmers over the past two decades.
To standing ovation, the California Cooperative Rice Research Foundation Rice Industry Award was presented to California Rice Commission’s (CRC) President & CEO Tim Johnson for his many years of tirelessly uniting, advocating for, and strengthening the California rice industry. Johnson thanked the audience, noting that any successes he has seen through his time with CRC is due to the support and inspiration from those around him, most notably his wife, Ann.
In addition to hearing about variety line advancements, including the 2024 release of its first ever aromatic Calrose variety (AM-201) and a promising new Calrose variety with yields similar to M-211, attendees also participated in field tours to learn about ways to manage herbicide-resistant grasses, integrating drone-based herbicide applications in water-seeded rice production systems, optimal nitrogen rates for California’s current rice varieties, and no-till drill seeding.
After a beautiful day in the field, attendees were treated to a lunch that included various California rice varieties as well as sushi.
