ARLINGTON, VA – Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the release of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) and the guidelines continue to recognize the essential role rice and grains play in helping Americans meet a healthy eating pattern. The guidelines are published every five years and serve as the foundation for nutrition policy and federal food programs.
The 2025-2030 edition debuts a new twist on the old food pyramid focusing on “real food” which features rice not once, but twice under both the whole grains and healthy proteins category. Through USA Rice’s advocacy over the last four years, grains continue to be an important pillar of a healthy diet recommended in the DGA, and rice is explicitly acknowledged as a preferred grain choice. The continued inclusion of grains demonstrates a strong and well-documented body of scientific evidence highlighting the essential nutrients rice and grains provide for all life stages, their ability to drive consumption of other healthy foods, and their accessibility and affordability.
“The updated 2025-2030 DGA food pyramid reinforces what science, and families across the country, have long known: rice plays an essential role in healthy eating patterns. Its inclusion under both whole grains and healthy proteins is a clear acknowledgment by USDA and HHS of rice as a preferred, foundational food,” said Meryl Kennedy Farr, Founder & CEO of 4Sisters Rice. “Across all life stages, rice provides essential nutrients, supports balanced meals by pairing naturally with vegetables, proteins and legumes, and it remains one of the most accessible and affordable foods on the plate.”
Other major takeaways from the DGA include the overall theme of consuming whole and nutrient dense foods, a stronger emphasis on daily protein and dairy intake, limits on sugar and highly processed foods, and changes to the guidance on daily alcohol intake.
Ahead of the regulatory and implementation process of these guidelines, USA Rice will continue its efforts to educate policy makers on how accessible, affordable, culturally significant, and nutrient dense staple foods like whole and enriched rice should serve as cornerstones of a healthy and sustainable eating pattern, encourage the creation of more flexibility around enriched grains, and work together toward the goal of reducing the burden of chronic disease and helping consumers make healthier choices for themselves and their families.
“USA Rice is pleased that the Administration heard our message about the significance of rice consumption in helping Americans achieve a healthy diet as demonstrated through rice’s representation on the food pyramid and the specific callout of rice as a preferred grain choice,” said Peter Bachmann, USA Rice president & CEO. “We appreciate that the DGAs focus on offering a common sense approach to nutrition that educates all Americans on nutritional needs and recognizes the role our farmers play in growing a safe and nutritious food supply. We look forward to working closely with USDA and HHS ahead of the regulatory changes and will continue to position the domestic rice industry as a resource and valued partner to the Administration.”
