LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – A delegation of USA Rice members and staff traveled here last week to participate in the UK Rice Symposium and visit with local trade organizations.
To kick off the week, the USA Rice delegation had a briefing session covering USA Rice strategy, market analysis and promotions in the UK, as well as Mintel, a global market intelligence agency, sharing valuable insights on the current UK consumer environment and retail market, highlighting UK consumers’ growing appetite for global cuisine and international dishes.
Rice is seen by consumers as a versatile and affordable staple in the UK, and consumption is on the rise. The estimated retail sales value of rice in the UK is 758 million GBP, a 2.8 percent increase from 2025.
The next day, the delegation visited with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) at the U.S. Embassy to learn about current politics in the UK, as well as the U.S.-UK trade relationship. The U.S. Ambassador to the UK, Warren Stephens-a native of Little Rock, Arkansas-met the group and was interested to hear U.S. rice industry updates and the opportunities on the UK market. That afternoon, the delegation then headed to Chinatown to visit a live demonstration by Chef Jeremy Pang at the branded USA Rice food truck.
In the evening, the group met for dinner with importers from the UK rice industry. "USA Rice was pleased to host an industry-focused dinner prior to the symposium as both an opportunity to thank our longtime UK-based customers and continue growing our relationship for many years to come.” said USA Rice President & CEO Peter Bachmann.
On Thursday, USA Rice sponsored the biannual Rice Symposium, the most important gathering for the UK rice industry. As part of the official program, USA Rice Chair John Owen shared insights on current U.S. rice conditions and sustainability efforts, and Bachmann covered USA Rice’s policy work and the latest political context. USA Rice also held a side meeting with the Federation of European Rice Millers to continue strengthening relations with its European counterparts.
U.S. milled rice enters the UK under a tariff rate quota (TRQ), which limits the amount of rice that can be imported duty-free to roughly 13,000 metric tons and adds cost for importers who buy U.S. rice. Meanwhile, all U.S. rice entering the UK outside of that milled rice TRQ is subject to varying duties on a per ton basis.
The US-UK Prosperity Deal was announced in May 2025 and is currently under negotiation. USA Rice continues to advocate for duty free access for all types and forms of U.S. rice.
The UK is the 18th largest export market for U.S. rice, with 21,000 MT exported in 2025, valued at $15.5 million. It is one of the few markets that imports a wide variety of U.S. rice types, including long grain milled, long grain parboiled, brown, medium grain, and short grain, as well as wild rice.
